]]>From November 8 to 11, the International Business Macrorueda of Colombia in the United States will be held in Houston, Texas, where nearly 200 national companies will present an offer of agri-foods, chemicals and life sciences, metalworking, fashion system, and Industry 4.0.
The event, led by the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Tourism in collaboration with ProColombia, will also host 200 international companies.
The activities will begin with an academic agenda on November 8, followed by two days of business meetings, and will conclude on November 11 with field visits that will allow Colombian entrepreneurs to understand the distribution and marketing channels according to each participating production chain.
The Minister of Commerce, Industry and Tourism, Germán Umaña Mendoza, emphasized that “in President Gustavo Petro’s administration, we are working to strengthen our offerings to external markets. We want to boost those exports with added value, which incorporate technical progress and allow us to transition from an extractive economy to one that promotes sustainable development in our country.”
The senior official highlighted that, in this regard, his department is implementing several actions to promote and strengthen small and medium-sized enterprises, so that they can integrate into international value chains, attract foreign direct investment, and enhance human capacity development.
“With this multisectoral commercial activity, we support Colombian entrepreneurs in their efforts to maintain the positive momentum of Colombia’s non-mining exports with added value to the United States, Latin America, and the Caribbean. It will focus specifically on micro, small, and medium enterprises from various departments of the country, particularly from PDET municipalities and those with less than 200,000 inhabitants, and on businesses that have a positive impact on communities and the environment,” stated Carmen Caballero, president of ProColombia.
The promotional activity will include complementary activities such as the “Colombia Business Conference” (on November 8), a space with an academic agenda covering relevant topics of interest for both buyers and exporters, including Logistics and Market Access, Sustainability, Artificial Intelligence, and Supply Chain Challenges for Small Businesses in the U.S.
On November 9 and 10, business meetings will take place, and November 11 will feature the Road to Market Experiences, group activities for exporters by sector according to market opportunities. It is worth noting that, prior to this International Macrorueda, webinars are being conducted to help entrepreneurs better understand North American countries and commercial opportunities in this region.
Additionally, the axes of Investment and Tourism will be included, featuring a conference on renewable energy pitches, along with sensory experiences and presentations of Colombia as a tourist destination.
Participants
Among the list of confirmed Colombian companies for this major commercial meeting are Bendito, a small company from Riosucio (Caldas), dedicated to the production of handmade women’s swimwear, with a capacity of 15,000 units per month, employing single mothers and individuals from indigenous communities in the municipality; Agrogreen Colombia, from Dosquebradas (Risaralda), which produces flavored powdered panela and sources its raw material from sugarcane farmers in Quinchía, Risaralda, who have been affected by armed conflict; and Artesanías de Colombia, an entity responsible for showcasing Colombia’s artisanal and cultural heritage, with programs focused on active collaboration with indigenous communities from the departments of La Guajira, Boyacá, Córdoba, Sucre, Chocó, Bolívar, Atlántico, Tolima, Cauca, Arauca, Casanare, Meta, Nariño, Guainía, and Amazonas.
It is noteworthy that the Colombian BPO sector, having a strong relationship with the U.S. market, will have a business space in a separate hall from the main one where the Macrorueda will take place, but within the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Houston, Texas. This will be called the BPO Networking event, with an expected attendance of about 40 to 50 people, including both exporters and buyers.
On the other hand, in the previous version of the Macrorueda held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 96 buyer companies and 130 exporting companies participated, resulting in 877 business meetings. This led to immediate purchases worth US$4.1 million and expectations of US$76 million.
According to Dane, Colombia’s non-mining exports from January to August 2022 reached US$14.645 billion, representing a 27.1% increase compared to the same period in 2021. The United States was the main buyer, with US$4.469 billion, reflecting a 34.1% increase from January to August 2021. Meanwhile, the most exported non-mining goods from Colombia to the world were green coffee, fresh flowers, plastics, palm oil, bananas, construction materials, and coffee derivatives.

With the idea of manufacturing and marketing respirators by hiring single mothers, Industrias Saver was born in 1998. This idea came from a group of coastal entrepreneurs who have held international certification from the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) since the end of 2012, making it one of the few companies in Latin America to have it.

Approximately 100 clients purchase these respirators for dust and toxic particles suspended in the air, which are distributed in all the capital cities of the country. In countries such as Ecuador, Peru, Chile, the United States, and Panama, they are consolidating business with distributors, actively participating in various fairs and macroruedas for over two years.
The projections of this small but dynamic company for 2014 are focused on increasing sales volume in the markets of the United States and Mexico. They have formed important alliances with these countries during the last business macrorueda organized by Proexport, which also provided them with an opportunity to explore new markets in countries they had not previously considered but are now daring to penetrate.

]]>Non-slip boots, safety masks, and aprons for the food sector are some of the products that Colombia can export to the Peruvian market.
This was identified during an exploratory mission by PROCOLOMBIA with 12 manufacturers of industrial safety equipment, who visited the cities of Trujillo and Lima to meet distributors and end customers in the agro-industrial and cement sectors.
“The entrepreneurs reported business expectations of one million dollars. They found that, for example, there are potential buyers for aprons for the food sector, full-body suits resistant to extreme temperatures, gloves, safety masks, and non-slip boots,” said María Claudia Lacouture, president of PROCOLOMBIA.
Additionally, Colombian exporters discovered that the main access channel to the market is through local distributors in Lima, who then supply their products to companies in Trujillo.
Peru is a strategic partner for the sector, as its industrial supply imports represented up to US$54 million in 2013, ranking among the top 50 buyers in the world, according to Trademap figures.
“The objective of such missions is also to provide information to entrepreneurs so they can adapt their offerings to market needs. In the last four years, we have facilitated travel for 766 national entrepreneurs to 18 different countries to deepen their understanding of logistics, access channels, and general market characteristics,” Lacouture added.
This was how the Barranquilla-based company Industrias Saver S.A. managed to finalize a shipment of five thousand respiratory protection masks to a Peruvian distributor they met during the meetings.
“They liked that our product does not come in sizes, but rather adapts to any type of face. Additionally, our individual packaging ensures that the product arrives in perfect condition to the end user,” concluded Carmen Arévalo, foreign trade coordinator for the company.”
